Elizabeth Saldaña, Program Coordinator for the We've Got Your Back Program, recently met a young boy that is being taken care of by his grandparents, both in their seventies. "Jason" has been abandoned by both parents as his father is in jail and his mother left him in the care of his grandparents. "Jason" has never had consistent care from his parents, as neither his mother nor father has been in his life for more than two years at a time. It is a struggle for his grandparents to just survive on their own, let alone with a small child to care for. Being able to pay the rent, utilities, clothes, medical bills and for groceries are an enormous challenge, especially since the grandparents no longer drive and are too elderly to work. "Jason" is on the free lunch program at his elementary school. These meals are often the only meals he receives. Giving Children Hope, through the food assistance of the We've Got Your Back Program, is able to provide "Jason" and numerous children like him with backpacks full of food to sustain him through his weekends. Elizabeth says, "When I spoke with the grandfather, he was so thankful for Giving Children Hope and the backpack program. He said 'Thank you… now I will be able to feed my child.' This brought tears to my eyes." Giving Children Hope is an international, not-for-profit relief and development organization that provides humanitarian aid and disaster relief to the poor and disenfranchised. Our main focus is to relieve the suffering of children and families.
