Leena gives hope and comfort in Andra Pradesh, India Almost every day for the last thirteen years, Leena has been traveling the dusty rural roads in India. Leena cares deeply about the poorest people in the huts just outside the community where she lives. She has gotten to know these poorest of the poor in rural India. Mostly, they are single women in abject poverty. Their only source of money is the men from the town who visit them at night. Because most of the children do not know who their father is, they can't enroll in the government schools. These children work as beggars or as laborers. Leena decided to open a school for these children. When word spread about the school, children began showing up. They met under trees for a while, then Leena rented space that had a concrete floor, where the children sat, and a roof, but no walls. Recently, Leena got a building with walls for her school. She hired two teachers and now there are a hundred children in her school. Leena provides two meals a day, clothes and medicines when they are sick. Leena has a vision for the children in Andra Pradesh, India. She wants them to go to school and have a chance for a better life. Children's Fund has helped Leena fulfill her vision. Leena is one of many indigenous community leaders that Children's Fund supports because we share their vision to build a better future for children.
