HELPING BLIND CHILDREN ATTEND SCHOOL In the United States, all children have a right to a free public education. This is not true in many developing countries. There are no Early Intervention Services and parents often do not feel school fees for blind children a worthwhile investment. After attending the First International Forum for Blind Women we received a request from an African country to help provide funds to send 10 children to secondary school. The school is not free. Uniforms, books, school fees and transportation must be paid for. We provided $100 per student which covered all expenses for one year. Their Acknowledgment to the Blind Children's Fund reads: We hereby express our most heartfelt gratitude for the funds you sent to our blind students. Our society did not have a tradition of educating the blind at the post primary level. Our school pioneered this initiative. We have the obligation to prove to our people (policy workers and parents alike),that the blind are capable, too, of learning. Your support was the first of its kind and we thank you. We have sent a list of students, in case your organization is still willing to help further. We would be most grateful.
